I 'do' think that pedal tones are something important to touch every so often. It is really quite dangerous to say 'If you want high notes, you need to master pedal/low notes' since they are different techniques.

So I just wanted to share my experience that pedal tones seem to be of no use to me, and I wonder if anyone else has had the same experience.Įverybody is different and their reactions to pedal tones are going to be vastly different. However, I didn't touch pedal tones for about 5 years, and instead used the Smith Top Tones preliminary study and the Bobby Shew Wedge breath (and to a small, interesting degree, learning to play high notes on clarinet) to expand my range from high C to F above the staff. I will admit that I can't play pedal C open, no matter how many years I have tried, and maybe that unlocking the secret will unlock more notes in my upper range. But playing pedal tones from F natural to pedal C both literally and figuratively feels to me like farting around. I'm not denying that it's a good idea to develop the lower register from C to low F#, which helps not only rejuvenate the lips between high notes, but tone development also. There's just no connection between the two. Just kidding! But seriously, I don't feel like pedal tones have done anything to help me develop my upper register. I'm posting because I want to start a fight.
